He was renowned in the village for walking teachers home from the school, on occasion fiercely fighting off coyotes and bears.
The teachers approached Moosonee Puppy Rescue, concerned for Chewie’s well-being. The night before the rescue workers came to fly him out Chewie was tormented, chased by a snow machine and spray-painted blue.
He’s a sweet-tempered hero though and has settled in nicely with his new human companions, Annemieka Struyk and Jani Hamalainen, both of whom work at Bracebridge Chiropractic and Wellness Centre on Manitoba Street.
The centre held an open house and patient appreciation day on Saturday, Oct. 27, offering assessments and treatment at no cost other than a voluntary donation to Moosonee Puppy Rescue.
They raised $816 for the charity.
