GRAVENHURST - Longtime friends and something of brothers in arms, owners from OK Taxi of Gravenhurst are throwing their support behind a fellow cab driver currently in serious condition in a Toronto hospital.
Gravenhurst Taxi employee of many years Frank Conway and his nine-month pregnant passenger were both seriously injured in a single-vehicle collision shortly before the midnight hour Sept. 15. Still under investigation, the accident required extrication units to free the victims and both were transported to hospital in Toronto with serious injuries. The female passenger was taken by air ambulance to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and is listed in stable condition.
The driver, however, has been placed in an induced coma and is still in serious condition as of press time. Good friend and fellow cab driver from OK Taxi, Sherry Canning and husband Bill have set up a trust fund in Conway’s name at the TD Bank in Gravenhurst to help generate support for his recovery and family.
Conway has two adult daughters, one by his side in Toronto.
“He’s a very good man,” Sherry Canning said.
“He is a good friend; we work for two different companies but he is a friend in need and his family has needs too.”
Canning said that on Sept. 18 Conway opened his eyes and seemed to move his hands and feet, but due to his serious condition, was placed into a coma shortly after. She said he has suffered broken feet, arms, hands, ribs and more.
“His body is quite broken; he is going to have a long recovery ahead of him and we’re behind him all the way,” she said.
