Clement on Service Canada cuts
Huntsville Forester
MP Tony Clement said he’s not expecting the recent service cuts by the federal government to have an impact on Parry Sound-Muskoka.
Clement spoke following the announcement that 5,000 Service Canada jobs will be cut across the nation.
“I’m not aware of any Service Canada cuts that specifically affect Parry Sound-Muskoka,” Clement said, though he admitted it’s difficult to say.
He said the only place that will possibly see some public service cuts in the area is the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Parry Sound.
There are five potential job cuts there, but the number of those who will actually lose their jobs will be less than five, he said.
Only about one-third of those in the public service who are originally notified of job cuts usually end up being cut by the time people make choices such as early retirement, said Clement.
He’s not expecting any job loss in the prisons or shifts at the Coast Guard.
“There may be some minor changes, but nothing big,” he said, referring to the few who may lose their jobs in the fisheries and oceans department.
