Bracebridge police warn of Haitian relief scam

MUSKOKA — Bracebridge OPP is warning the public about a possible scam that aims to capitalize on the current Haitian relief efforts taking place throughout town.

According to police, on Jan. 28, OPP were contacted about a suspicious person conducting door-to-door solicitation for orphans in Haiti. Police said the canvasser did not present himself in a professional manner and did not have proper identification or information packages.

OPP said the person was soliciting funds after 9 p.m.

The suspect was identified as a black male wearing dark clothing and running shoes. The man was not properly dressed for the cold weather, police report.

OPP said the male presented several photographs of young children on individual cards as orphaned children from Haiti. On each card, the words “World Vision” were observed, OPP said.

The suspect was not located in Bracebridge and no information about anyone being victimized was reported.

The OPP remind the public to exercise diligence and common sense when approached by door-to-door salesmen.

They note that legitimate canvassers should have proper identification of their company or organization, including brochures and pamphlets. The public should check with the Better Business Bureau if they are uncertain.
