Gryphons boys’ basketball season on hold for now

GRAVENHURST - The Gravenhurst High School Gryphons boys’ basketball teams both got off to a decent start to the season kicking off Dec. 4.
The juniors began with a tough-fought 35-32 overtime win over Parry Sound while the seniors fell 44-36, and both clubs lost narrow games to Bracebridge Dec. 6.
But a teacher work-to-rule campaign that ends teacher participation in extracurricular activities as of Dec. 10 has put the league on hold for the time being, with a chance it may not get back up if the strike action lasts much longer than a few weeks.
“Assuming there is a league after Monday (Dec. 10), I think we have a good opportunity to grow this year,” said coach of both the junior and senior Gryphons, Iggy VanKooten. “I’ve got lots of athleticism on both teams and the seniors have a really strong core of talent.”
The juniors lost a very tight game against the Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School Lakers Dec. 6, playing most of the game from behind before mounting a 19-17 lead by the end of the third period. However, Bracebridge would buckle down and score the eventual victory.
GHS athletic director Corry Ziorjen said the league will be put on hold as of the Dec. 10, but added that things can change quickly, so there could be a season if the strike action doesn’t last too long.
