WASAUKSING - It’s been more than a month since the Olympic torch passed through the area.
A local Wasauksing First Nation youth was nominated by his community  as an outstanding youth role model. This young man, Winston Badger, was then selected to carry the torch on December 30, 2009.
Winston did so proudly, with a smile from ear to ear. As this was the day that he had been looking forward to since he found out he had been selected.
“I am more excited than I am at Christmas Dad,” he said.
Winston is a proud young person; proud of his heritage and the reservation where he is from. He shows a love of sports and plays with a passion that can be seen on any of the local rinks and fields that he frequents. His athletic skills span all sports, from hockey, to baseball, basketball and even tennis and soccer.
His number one sport of choice, though, is golf and his love is shown by his constant presence at all of the courses starting in the early spring, into the summer and late fall.
On January 12, you would have found Winston at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. He took his torch around to the local elders where they had an opportunity take pictures with him in his Olympic track suit, hat and mitts.
Afterwards Winston went to the Parry Sound High School, where he is in Grade 9, to have his torch, track suit, hat and mitts put on display for years to come where they will sit as a reminder to all that see them that, the Olympic flame passed through Wasauksing First Nation and Parry Sound on December 30, 2009.
That day was truly a day that Winston will never forget, nor the community that watched on proudly as he carried on a national tradition that was a once in a lifetime event for him.
