Annual Winter Whirl kicks off Friday morning with euchre

Pointe Au Baril News

I can just hear the leisure committee singing, “let it snow let it snow let it snow.”  This is the weekend of building the giant snowball in front of the nursing station.  The fun begins at 10 a.m. and a pail of snow only costs $1.  All proceeds go to raising the roof on the rink.
Also this weekend is the Winter Whirl carnival starting Friday with euchre registration at 10 a.m. and the tourney starting at 10:30 a.m. Family fun night starts at 5 p.m with hotdogs, hamburgers, hot chocolate and fun. You don’t need to be a professional to play broomball or hockey shot - there will be fun for all.  Rumour has it that the winter whirl president is even playing. Saturday starts off with a bang at the skeet shoot on the ice. Registration is at 10 a.m. and shooting starts at 10:15 a.m.  Last year it wasn’t an all men event so women, come show the men you can also do this.  The other events start at noon with blind snowmobile races, obstacle course, log sawing, tug of war, and plank races. Let the games begin!
After a day outside, enjoy a delicious roast beef dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. for only $10. The Granka Harris band is the entertainment for the evening starting at 8:30 p.m.  The cost of the dance is $10 and you must be 19 or over to attend the dance.
There will be a free taxi service provided (tips are greatly appreciated though) and door prizes (you must be in attendance if your name is drawn).  If you are taking in both the dinner and dance in you can get a real deal for only $15.  If you have any questions on winter whirl or would like to volunteer call Darlene Evoy at 774-1726.
The first week of February sees a lot of birthday babies in Pointe au Baril.  Happy birthday wishes go out to Paul Penfold, Eric Gardner, Terry Gardner, Sara West and Bill Pugsley.  Belated happy birthday to Kathy Evoy who it seems had a birthday last Wednesday and I was told by a resourceful relative her age changes depending on when you ask her. No worries though, Kathy, he really does know how old you are!
The emergency response team also sent out a flyer this week on the attack unit. If you would like to sponsor this project or make a donation please do. Every dollar counts and it’s greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions on the attack unit please contact Mike Payne or Mark Payne.  If you didn’t receive the flyer, contact Kathy Evoy.
If you have any news, birthday or anniversary wishes you would like to share contact me at 366-2866 or email me at ruthannmuma@hotmail.com.
This week in “Remember When” gives me a chance to thank all my extended family, the people of Pointe au Baril.  I remember so well four years ago when tragedy struck you were all there supporting my family and we thank you everyday.  Sometimes people forget just how precious family and friends are. So to you my family and friends I love you all.  Have a great week and see you at the carnival!
