Gearing up for Pointe au Baril's annual Winter Whirl

Pointe au Baril News

Hello Pointe au Baril.  I know it’s been a while, but I haven’t had anyone call or email me.  I’m going to have to start making things up soon!
Hockey’s back! Hockey’s back!  Sorry, just love saying that. Happy days, especially for Leaf fans.  We all know they can do well for half of a season.
They’re golden.
It was nice to have junior hockey over the holidays, but seriously, 4 a.m. game times? I have to admit I only watched a couple of games; pretty sad for a rabid hockey fan.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas and fantastic New Year’s Eve.  Christmas is one of my favourite times of the year - all the lights and decorations and all the family get-togethers.  I managed to have three turkey dinners in 24 hours. It’s great to see everyone’s kids home for the holidays.
This is also the time of year that everyone makes and breaks New Years resolutions. Mine is an easy one to keep this year, enjoy life and be kind to others.  Simple. I wish you all nothing but the best for 2013.
Well, it finally happened, snow came and stayed.  We all knew it was bound to happen.  It seemed like there was snow all around us, but unfortunately, (not a fan of winter) its here to stay.  I see there are snowmobiles on the ice.
Please make sure when you are travelling on the ice to: know where you are going, don’t follow someone else’s trail if you aren’t sure, and check the ice conditions before you go.  Personally, I only step on the ice in February and only after many have gone before me.
Thanks to the effort of some local guys, the ice rink is up and running.  I hope everyone makes good use of it.
Winter Whirl is just around the corner. Everything is going to start on Friday, Feb. 1 and continue on Saturday, Feb. 2. Our tentative plan is for a shinny hockey game and broomball game on Friday night and euchre during the day.  Saturday should be a blast with all the on and off ice activities. These are great fun for everyone and free to enter (except the skeet shoot). Bring your kids; bring your grandparents, there is something for everyone.  This will all be followed by our famous roast beef dinner and a dance featuring the Michael Granka Band. Many door prizes and gifts will be given away during the night.
If there are any students in need of volunteer hours, we could use a hand.
There’s been a lovely cold going around this season. I was hit by the cold and flu bug a few weeks ago; knocked the life right out of me.  I was bedridden for almost five days.  Soup, rest, tea and water were my salvation.  If you catch it, hunker down; it will stay with you for a while.
The local North East Georgian Bay Snowmobile Clubs president Tim Stark has stepped down.
The new president is Mark Zuck and treasurer is Karen Penfold.  The club wants to thank Tim for all his hard work and dedication to the club and his position.  This is another group that is always looking for volunteers.  If you’re interested get in touch with Rob Morel.
I understand that Kay Scale is in the hospital with pneumonia. Get well soon Kay.

That is all for now.  Have a great week Pointe au Baril.
