Portion of railroad breaks in Nobel

Train stops. A train stops on the tracks across Felsman Drive last week after a piece of the track broke. Roland Cilliers/North Star
NOBEL – A handful of Nobel residents were blocked off from their homes last Monday.
A roughly one-foot chunk of track broke off where the railroad crosses Felsman Drive. This caused a northbound train to come to a stop for several hours while engineering crews repaired the breakage.
Kevin Hrysak, a representative with Canadian Pacific Rail, said at no point was there a danger of people being hurt.
“A few cars went over it, but no incident happened,” said Hrysak. “Obviously, there was no derailment or anything like that. We immediately released our engineering forces to repair the rail, but the cause of the break is under investigation. At no point was there a safety concern.”
The train blocked off the road while crews worked and meant that residents who lived along Felsman, East of the crossing, were unable to drive to and from their homes.
To repair the broken section, crews cut the area and placed joint bars on either side to add in the new section. The repair takes between three and four hours.
“These types of things can happen from time to time, but we do have our engineering forces regularly patrolling the track along with our train crews,” Hrysak said. “They’re very vigilant at reporting any rough spots or anything like that so it’s not out of the ordinary, but it’s not a common occurrence.”
