Negative Doubles covered in Chalk Talk Tuesday

Bridge in the afternoon

The Parry Sound Bridge club met on Tuesday, June 5 and birthday wishes went out to Louis Pella and Betty Houle.  Super special wishes went out to Barbara Yarnold and Gerry Boothe.  These two wonderful women celebrate their birthdays on the same day, and they are both in their nineties.
Word is out that Grace Marshall, one of our all time favourite bridge players, will be celebrating her 100th birthday next week.  Our love and best wishes go out to Grace.
Bob Jarvis’s homework challenge on Negative Doubles (ND) was discussed this week during Chalk Talk. This convention is a must for duplicate bridge players.
ND is only bid after your partner has opened, and the opponent makes an overcall.  Your ND bid is a message telling partner that you have at least four cards in the other two unbid suits. For example if the player’s partner opens with one club, and opponent overcalls with one diamond, your ND tells partner that your holdings contain both majors.
If your partner bids one diamond and the opponent bids one spade, your ND bid tells partner that you have the other major, and at least six high card points.  This convention is worth reading up on, and like most conventions, it can be researched on the Internet.
A Mitchell movement was set up and after the final scores were tallied, the results were as follows.
North/South: First and first overall, Gail Payne – John Ducklow; second, Lissa Lowes – Jerry Daley; third, Noreen Limbert – Ruth Anne Miles; and fourth, Louis Pella – Fred Lefevre.
East/West:  First, Ken Burgoyne – Chris Beck; second, Betty Houle – Don Beck; third,  Anne – Ross Brown; and fourth, Carol Mymco – Pat Cassidy.
Game results can be found in the Parry Sound section of the following website: http://www.unit238.bridge-club.org/node/97
