PARRY SOUND - The Parry Sound Area Chamber of Commerce annual President’s Gala and Business 2011 Awards saw the biggest turnout ever with more than 146 in attendance.
This year, the event was presented by Bell, with five awards presented to chamber members as nominated and voted on by fellow members.
The coveted President’s Award went to new business owner Stephanie Delaurier, of Kudos Kuisine. The recipient of this award is nominated at the discretion of the president of the chamber. The award recognizes an individual or business which the president bestows this honour.
“Wow, I was not expecting this,” Delaurier said Friday. “I have to thank my family and wonderful team at Kudos Kuisine. I have been blessed with an amazing group of people around me and with great support from the Chamber of Commerce. This is such an honour and I look forward to the many more amazing things to come. Thank you!”
Business of the year, for the second year in a row, went to Distler Construction Ltd. The award recognizes a business that has consistently provided superior service and products to their customers in the Parry Sound area.
“We’re honoured to have won, Business of the Year two years in a row,” said Alex Distler. “Thank you to everyone who voted for us.”
Entrepreneur of the year went to Stephanie Norrie, with Applause Party Rentals. The award recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit of a person or persons responsible for accepting the challenges and risks of purchasing, opening, expanding or significantly diversifying a business in the Parry Sound area in 2011.
“Receiving the Entrepreneur of the Year award is incredibly motivating,” said Norrie Monday afternoon. “Everyday I try to be the best business owner I can be, and that usually means long days and hard work. Winning an award that recognizes the challenges and successes that entrepreneurs encounter, reinforces the fact that hard work and dedication do pay off. It’s wonderful to be a part of such a supportive business community.”
The Island Queen Cruise was recognized, receiving the Tourism Award. The award recognizes an individual or business that has demonstrated a commitment to leading, developing and growing the tourism industry in the Parry Sound area, though concepts, partnerships and initiatives.
“We appreciate receiving the Chamber of Commerce Tourism Award for 2011,” said Steve Anderson. “It is a testament to our great staff and the wonderful service they have provided to our many customers over the years.”
It was a tie for the Community Leadership Award. Recognizing the time and dedication of an individual or business has made to serving and building community initiatives in the Parry Sound area, Parry Sound Mayor Jamie McGarvey presented the award to Susan Tait, with Georgian Bay Women’s Network, and Barb Kerr, with Investors Group Financial Services Inc. Kerr was unable to make the event.
“It is a really nice feeling when you receive recognition within your community, I am honoured,” said Tait. “But the honour would not have been possible without the support of the Community Business and Development Centre board and staff, and especial the women of the Georgian Bay Women’s Network.”
Kerr said she is touched by the honour.
“To be in the company of other such great nominees and the co-winner, Susan Tait, to know that other business owners voted - their thoughts warms my heart,” said Kerr. “I wouldn’t have been nominated without the help of my family - Chuck, Matthew, Shawn, Ed and Georgie McFadgen - and my amazing associate Kathy Chard. A big thanks to them and their efforts on our community events.”
