Seguin Township – Today Mayor David Conn and Mayor Jamie McGarvey announced the minor boundary adjustment of land from Seguin to Parry Sound has not received the required support from landowners. The 12 affected landowners in Seguin were consulted and asked to vote on the proposal to transfer lands. Seguin Council required a 2/3rds majority of residents to agree with the proposal. This meant that no more than 4 residents could vote against the proposal. Since Seguin has already received 5 “no” votes, the land transfer process has been suspended pending further discussion.
Since early 2011, the Councils of Seguin and Parry Sound have cooperatively discussed a boundary adjustment including approximately 132 hectares of land to enhance potential economic development activities in the region. The potential agreement was subject to consultation and agreement with landowners and Seguin would only consider transferring land with the support of its residents.
“We have consulted with the affected landowners in Seguin and they have spoken in opposition to the boundary adjustment. We respect their decision to remain within our municipality,” said Mayor Conn. “Regional cooperation is a priority for Seguin, we will continue to work in partnership with the Town of Parry Sound to identify economic development opportunities to benefit our entire region.”
Due to the termination of the proposed boundary adjustment, the public meeting to be held at the Foley Agricultural Hall on February 15, 2012 at 7:00 pm has been cancelled.
“The Town of Parry Sound, through its 2011-2014 Strategic Plan, has identified Regional Co-operation and Economic Development as Strategic Directives,” said Mayor Jamie McGarvey. “We too respect the decision of the affected Seguin Township landowners to remain within the Township and are hopeful that the two municipalities will meet to further discuss options.”
