EMSDALE – More than $5,900 was raised for Haiti relief by the students of Evergreen Heights Education Centre.
To reach the outstanding figure, students held a Skate-a-thon at the Burk’s Falls arena in February with 170 of the 221 at the school participating.
Student council member Taylor McAlpine says they managed to keep costs down with the arena donating ice time and First Student Bus Lines donating two buses to help out.
The grand total of their fundraising efforts was given an additional boost with a donation from Canusa in Huntsville.
“We got a $2,500 cheque from Canusa because they were so impressed with our Tsunami fundraiser,” said student council member Carley Palangio. The students raised more than $6,000 in 2005 for tsunami relief efforts.
She says as student council representatives they tried to keep the students motivated with their pledge forms.
“We wanted to help the people out,” she said.
“It was very, very heartbreaking to see all those people on the streets,” said student council representative Libby Bowdler. “You have to give back to the world.”
