Former NHLer to speak at mayors’ prayer breakfast

MUSKOKA - The 11th annual Mayors of Muskoka Prayer Breakfast will feature former NHLer Paul Henderson and his wife Eleanor as the guest speakers.
The two have been married for more than 50 years and spoken at numerous marriage conferences sharing their experiences and wisdom.
“I am fortunate to call Paul a close friend and he is simply one of the most impressive human beings I have ever met,” said Mike Harrower, a leader with Muskoka Leader Impact Group. “One of the most beautiful things to witness is his relationship with Eleanor, which is why I am so excited that they have agreed to speak together.”
Over the past year, Henderson has received the Order of Hockey in Canada, the Order of Canada, inducted to Canada’s Walk of Fame and this May he’ll be inducted into the International Hockey Hall of Fame.
Henderson was part of the 1972 Team Canada crew who defeated Russia by winning the final three games in the series. It was Henderson who scored the winning goal in each of those games.
He played in the NHL for 18 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings, and the Atlanta Flames, scoring 376 goals and 384 assists.
Henderson holds two Honorary Doctor of Divinity degrees and has co-authored a number of books including How Hockey Explains Canada and his autobiography, The Goal of My Life.
Eleanor is involved with women’s ministries and pastoral care ministries and is described as someone who instills confidence and strength in others through her gentle, caring manner.
The prayer breakfast is April 6 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at Deerhurst Resort. Tickets will be available after March 15 and cost $30 each. Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
