MUSKOKA – A world-renown travel magazine has once again given Muskoka the nod as a top tourist destination.
District of Muskoka chair John Klinck told district councillors to hold their heads high as representatives of a region that has been recognized by National Geographic Traveler as an international destination of note for the second consecutive year.
He presented each of Muskoka’s six area mayors with plaques of scenic photos in recognition of the honour during a district council meeting on Oct. 22.
“We were all more than pleased to learn last year and again this year of National Geographic’s designation,” said Klinck. “I’m sure that you would all agree to be acknowledged in this manner by such a respected international organization as National Geographic is something that each of us should be very proud of.”
Muskoka ranked first in the magazine’s 10 Best Summer Trips 2011 and ninth in its Best of the World 2012.
He said each of the municipalities and citizens should be proud of the collective contribution each has made to Muskoka.
Klinck presented two plaques to each mayor. The plaques were of photos taken by a Muskoka resident and friend of Klinck’s who had his photos selected by the magazine for publication.
The photographer, Randy Craig, tries to capture the splendor of Muskoka on a daily basis, said Klinck. He suggested the photos not only illustrate the National Geographic honour, but the beauty of the region as well.
The mayors accepted the plaques with smiles.
