Recruits sought for department

NIPISSING – The fire department is recognizing fire prevention week with an open house, fit with tours and refreshments.

“It’s a way to get people out to see the changes and encourage recruitment,” said Deputy Clerk Kris Croskery-Hodgins, noting the fire department currently has 17 volunteers, but the goal is to have at least 20.

The event is being held at Station 1, located at 2381 Highway 654, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.

Local firefighters, including Fire Chief Rob Serson, will be in attendance at the meet and greet, as well as a special canine guest.

“I believe Sparky will be making an appearance,” Croskery-Hodgins said with a laugh. “That’s what my daughter is thrilled about.”

Nipissing’s fire department was hit by tragedy in December of last year when one of its firefighters was killed in a single-vehicle collision while en route to a fire call on Dec. 27.

Croskery-Hodgins said she doesn’t think the accident has deterred new recruits.

“Everyone, everywhere is having trouble with recruitment,” she said. “I don’t think the incident plays a part in this.”

Croskery-Hodgins said it’s the needs of the job that often keeps people from making the commitment.

“Being a volunteer firefighter takes so much time and dedication,” she said. “With people’s busy lifestyles it can be difficult to find the time to commit.”

Staff will be available during the event to answer any questions from the public and prospective volunteers, as well as providing tours and fire safety information.

Offering up free drinks and hot dogs, Croskery-Hodgins said the event is fun for the whole family.
