Hundreds of students converge on park for annual Hoya Hills meet

There is something just fundamentally right about watching kids try to beat each other in a running race, and in the picturesque fall sunshine no less.
Approximately 600 elementary cross-country runners from all over Muskoka converged on Arrowhead Provincial Park on Tuesday, Oct. 2 for Huntsville High School’s annual Hoya Hills Cross-Country Meet. The meet is in its 17th year.
On Tuesday there were teachers leading students who had competed in the run themselves. This is a sure sign of a healthy community and a testament to the dedication of the high school’s cross-country athletes.
The HHS cross-country team were the ones to flag the trails, marshal the routes, announce the races, and otherwise corral many little energetic runners. All hands were on deck as the high school running team provided strong role-modelling for the up and comers, ensuring the younger generation left with smiles and high spirits.
After the empty drink boxes had been collected and the medals awarded, there was a collective sigh of satisfaction by those leaving the park; it was a more than pleasant day within the beautiful landscapes of Arrowhead Provincial Park. For the past four years Arrowhead has been generous enough to provide – free of charge – the venue for the meet. It is part of its commitment to the community of Huntsville and surrounding areas and does not go un-noticed.
They say it takes a village to raise a child, and if the Hoya Hills Cross-Country Meet is anything to go by, Huntsville is doing a very good job.
