Faulty lamp sparks a devastating cottage blaze

MUSKOKA LAKES - A fire sparked by a faulty lamp sent firefighters scrambling to an address on a dark and desolate Torrance road on Wednesday, Sept. 21.
This newspaper broke news of the blaze on the Bracebridge Examiner Twitter account shortly after 2:30 a.m., Wednesday, when a structure fire was reported at a cottage on Whitings Road near Hardy Lake Provincial Park.
Muskoka Lakes fire chief Richard Hayes said the fire, which gutted the building, caused about $350,000 in damage.
The cottage was unoccupied when the fire started.
Hayes said the incident is a reminder for cottagers to keep fire safety top of mind when heading home.
“Cottagers are reminded to unplug all appliances and lamps prior to winterizing for the season,” he said.
Fireboat called in
Fire crews from the Walker’s Point-Torrance and Bala stations were joined by a fireboat in combating the blaze. Police and paramedics were also called in for support.
The fire department’s tanker trucks had to shuttle water down an extremely narrow one-lane roadway in pitch-black darkness from sources on nearby East Bay Road.
Fire crews remained on the scene until around 8 a.m. to perform overhaul.
