$5,000 awarded in Make Your Lake Great contest

MUSKOKAN - Kahshe Lake has a little extra money to make it even greater.
As a result of the enthusiastic participation by many Kahshe Lake property owners, Kahshe was the winner of the Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations Make Your Lake Great Contest. Winning the contest comes with a $5,000 prize that will go towards making the lake even better.
Bob Reyburn, Kahshe Lake Ratepayers Association president, said the money will be used to broaden their rock marker project.
“Kahshe Lake has a lot of boating hazards due to rocks appearing out of the water from time to time,” Reyburn said. “This summer it’s been more severe than usual because of the lack of rain and low water levels. In the off-season, we initiated a project to not only renew the existing markers but see if we could give better coverage than what we had before.”
The fourth biggest of the Muskoka Lakes, Kahshe is popular for cottagers but also notorious for its boat hazards. With the expansion of the marker program, the ratepayers’ association is hoping to drastically reduce or eliminate collisions with rocks.
The Make Your Lake Great Contest saw more than 1,150 entries from property owners at over 320 lakes across the province. Those entering had between March 23 and July 15 to submit their entries. When the deadline was reached, a random draw was held which ended up selecting a member of the Kahshe Lake Ratepayers Association.
Entrants to the contest were asked how their lake would use the $5,000 if they won. Roughly 90 per cent of entrants said they would use the funds for boating-related improvements, like docking and boat launches. One-third of entrants specifically mentioned rock markers.
While the final draw for the contest was random, the odds that a lake would win were increased for each person from that area who entered.
Property owners around Kahshe Lake came out in force to enter in promotion of their lake.
“It’s a great environment, good fishing and there are lots of summer cottages and homes here,” said Reyburn. “We have clean water and all those sorts of things that make summer in Muskoka, wherever it is, a great place to be.”
