Great Muskoka Relay offers experience to remember

Relay will help send underprivileged and special needs kids to camp

MUSKOKAN - Four Ontario-based organizations have banded together to make sure that no kid is left behind. ALIVE Outdoors, Camp Kirk, Camp Winston, and Northwaters are working with MultiSport Canada to put on a unique fundraising relay that will enable kids from across the country to experience the outdoors.
On Sept. 22, teams from all over North America will compete in the Great Muskoka Relay: a 100-km, running relay race circumnavigating the shores of Lake Joseph. The Great Muskoka Relay has a mandatory fundraising component that will see more kids have amazing outdoor experiences. Each relay participant is required to raise a minimum of $50 for one of the partner camp charities, thereby ensuring that hundreds of underprivileged and special needs kids will attend camp in 2012 and 2013.
Camp Kirk provides a unique camp experience for children six to 13 with exceptionalities: learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, autism spectrum disorders, and incontinence issues (campkirk.com).
Camp Winston provides rare recreational opportunities for children and youth who live with the challenges of a complex range of neurological disabilities requiring highly specialized care (campwinston.com).
ALIVE Outdoors is an experiential and outdoor education company specializing in the creation and delivery of customized, meaningful programs for schools and organizations (aliveoutdoors.com).
Northwaters offers a unique blend of summer camp, adventure and personal growth for young men and women in a supportive family environment (northwaters.com). Northwaters scholarships are provided by Deepwater Experiential Education Program (deepwaterproject.org).
In the Great Muskoka Relay, teams of three to 10 will combine to run the inaugural 100-km race continuously in one day. The relay begins and ends at Cleveland’s House with exchange zones throughout the route. Each leg of the relay varies in length from eight to 13 kilometres.
There are two divisions within the relay: the Fun and Family Division (five to 10 members) and the Competitive Division (three to five members).
The Fun and Family Division will begin at 7 a.m. It is recommended that all racers can run an average of at least 10 km/h, resulting in a nine- to 11-hour completion time.
The Competitive Division will start at 9 a.m. Racers in the Competitive Division should be able to average 10 kilometres in under 50 minutes. An awards ceremony/celebration is planned for the evening, once all teams have completed the course.
