Benefit dance for newborn this Saturday

NEWBORN SOYYER LAHN.
BURK’S FALLS/KEARNEY – Friends are throwing their support behind a local family who is spending more than their fair share of time at Sick Kids Hospital.

Little Soyyer Lahn was born Aug. 31, about seven weeks early.

The infant is Kearney resident Lois Lahn’s great-grandson. She says her grandson Gary and wife Marly of Burk’s Falls are staying by their baby’s bedside for as long as it takes for him to develop fully.

“Gary’s had to take a lot of time off work,” said Lahn, who says they don’t know when the couple is expected to bring the baby home. “He’s a carpenter. His boss has been really good to take the time he needs.”

However, taking the time off work is a burden none-the-less so friends decided that they would pitch in, get some music going and hold a silent auction at the Kearney Community Centre to help the couple on Sept. 15 from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

They have managed to get a room at Ronald McDonald house but Lahn says accommodation in the beginning was costly. Funds will help the family with other costs as well, including food and transportation.

Overall Lois says the family is doing well all things considered and little Soyyer is still on oxygen but seems to be coming along nicely.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
