Muskoka video contest offers $10,000 in prizes

WHAT'S YOUR MUSKOKA?.
MUSKOKA — What makes Muskoka so special?
Is it the rugged terrain, pristine lakes, or the friendly people? The answer is probably a little different for everyone and the Muskoka Tourism Marketing Agency (MTMA) is hoping to hear all of them in their What’s Your Muskoka? video contest.
The competition tasks all Ontarians over the age of 18 with creating a less-than-two-minute video that defines what makes Muskoka so special for them.
“We are encouraging people, especially if they have pride in the local area, to share something they enjoy doing or seeing,” said Sheila Creighton Marketing Manager at the MTMA. “We want them to share that with the world so we can kind of say, ‘Look at all the diverse things there are to do and see here.’”
Applicants can enter videos in one of four categories — people, arts, environment and experience. That means if the videographer’s idea of what defines Muskoka is the people, whether that is an individual or an organization, then they would make a video for the people category.
For many, the region is synonymous with lakes and summer relaxing, but the MTMA is hoping to see a different side of Muskoka represented as well.
“If people have video they shot last winter we really, really encourage them to enter it,” said Creighton. “Take a video and chop it down to under two minutes — we’re really hoping to get some winter stuff. Obviously, people think of Muskoka as a summer, fall and spring destination, but most people don’t think of winter so we’re really trying to promote that.”
As incentive, the MTMA is offering an impressive prize package for the contest winners as well as quarterly raffle prizes just for entering. In total, there’s more than $10,000 worth of prizes up for grabs.
The winner in the experience category is awarded a $2,700 prize pack that includes a round of golf for four people at the Muskoka Bay Club, a two-night stay for two people at Residence Inn Muskoka Wharf and a family pass to the Muskoka Wildlife Centre.
“We want to encourage people to think about it and go out there and do a video,” Creighton said. “If there is some activity they really enjoy or some place that they really like to be or stay at, we would like to see it. It’s just to get people thinking about what Muskoka means to them because it could mean something different to everyone.”
The contest runs until Nov. 26 of this year and there is a limit of one entry per person. All videos must be original content and cannot contain any copyrighted or offensive material.

Club focusing on controversial books

Delve into forbidden literature at the Bracebridge Public Library. The library’s May book club meeting is centred on banned or challenged books.

Tour the world without leaving town

Seeing the world is as easy as visiting the local public library. “It’s armchair travelling,” said acting chief librarian Caralene Clement. The Gravenhurst Public Library finished its spring travel series with a full house on April 30 viewing a presentation on Costa Rica. Because the series was so well attended, the library is planning a second set this fall.
