GRAVENHURST - Ed Konda’s pride and joy is now a true calendar girl.

The former aerospace industry president and general manager who retired to build custom kit cars from his home in Severn Bridge has his very first project featured in the pages of a new Walmart calendar. The hot red 2009 Factory Five GTM, mid-engine super car that he built from pavement up is Miss July, gleaming in the summer sun.
“The calendar is all about dream cars,” he explained. “They wanted people to send in a picture of their dream car and a little bit of information and maybe they’d call you back.”
“They called back and I couldn’t believe it,” he added.
The 2009 GTM was his first project after retirement from the high-pressure corporate world. It had been about 30 years since he had done any work on cars, but it was a passion that drove him to his new life building kit cars.
The featured high-performance super car took him about a year to build and is one of two Factory Five models he still owns.
It’s a car he describes as a “sick monster,” featuring a massive 505 horsepower Porsche engine.
For the most part, Konda said, he builds custom and specialized vehicles for customers that, once completed, he has to watch drive off.
He said it’s been a busy year for his building and he didn’t get much time to actually enjoy his dream car.
“I drove it a few times this summer and made some car show appearances with it (in Gravenhurst and Orillia),” he said. “I’ve just been too busy to spend much time driving it though.”
The calendar photo is one he took during the Orillia Waterfront Festival. Asked if he gave any thought to himself or a bikini-clad model splayed out on the hood for the photo he said, “No way, I wouldn’t want to scratch it and she looks good enough all on her own.”
He is currently working on another dream car, a 1955 wide-body Porsche Speedster, although, again, it too will drive off into the sunset with its owner.
