Rosseau Market publishes cookbook

Huntsville Forester

SEGUIN - Ever wondered how to bake with yeast, make sauerkraut or ice cream, or brew spruce beer? You’ll find out how in Rosseau Market Cooks, a 200-page book of recipes created by the Rosseau Farmers Market.
The book will be launched at the Rosseau Memorial Hall at the market’s annual general meeting, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 29. The event is open to the public. Refreshments created from the book will be provided.
Rosseau Market Cooks is a collection of family favourites contributed by Rosseau Market vendors and visitors, their friends and relatives, and residents of Rosseau and Hekkla. The book boasts a humorous edge, practical advice and brief historical annotations on the recipes or on local village lore. Parry Sound artist Marc De Groote, a Rosseau Market member, created sketches for the book.
Many of the recipes have a backwoods flavour, awakening childhood memories of the master cooks of the home hearth in bygone days. For example, one recipe was found in an abandoned homestead.
A couple of the recipes from Hekkla were brought over from Iceland, when the immigrants from that treeless country settled in the thick coniferous forest of the Canadian shield. They named their village Hekkla, after the volcano in their homeland.
The book will be sold at Rosseau Farmers Market during the summer and at various locations in Rosseau.
