Students seek volunteer hours

Parry Sound High School

Huntsville Forester

Moving into high school brings on a number of new freedoms, and along with that comes responsibilities. One very important responsibility of every PSHS student is volunteer hours.
In order to graduate every student must complete 40 hours of volunteer work with the conditions set out by the school. The conditions exclude tasks such as household chores, or babysitting.
“I think it’s a great way to give students the initiative to get out and help out in their community” says one PSHS student that has completed their hours.
“I think it’s a good idea because it gives students something they can use on job and college applications.” says a student who has the required amount of hours and is working towards more.
Many students are eagerly looking for opportunities to receive hours.
The school offers a number of opportunities for the students. In the past, students have volunteered at Art in the Park, the grade 8 camping trip, and participating in student council. The school constantly advertises these options for students on a bulletin board in the front lobby, as well as the daily announcements.
Grade 12 students must have their hours handed in at the Student Services office within the month of April to graduate. Reminders are given over the PSHS announcements around this time to remind students. The 40 hours is the compulsory amount but not a limit, PSHS loves to see its students out and about helping in the community.
